{"id":37762,"date":"2014-01-24T22:42:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-24T22:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=37762 "},"modified":"2014-01-24T22:42:00","modified_gmt":"2014-01-24T22:42:00","slug":"37762-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=37762","title":{"rendered":"China activist Liu Yuandong on trial in Guangzhou"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>24 January 2014 Last updated at 05:04 ET<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2014\/4\/2014124_72493351_72493345.jpg\" alt=\"2014124_72493351_72493345.jpg (624&#215;351)\" \/><\/div><div>Southern Weekly newspaper copies are left on display at a newsstand in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, 7 January 2014.<\/div><div><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div>The Southern Weekend became embroiled in a censorship row with local party officials last year<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>A court in China has started the trial of activist Liu Yuandong, one of several activists in court this week.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Mr Liu, a leader of a movement which has organised small protests urging an end to one-party rule, is accused of disrupting public order.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>The charge relates to rallies last year to protest against censorship at an influential newspaper.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>His trial starts with the verdict expected in the case of another prominent activist on Sunday.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Liu Yuandong started the Southern Street Movement in Guangzhou and was part of protests against the censorship of the Southern Weekly newspaper.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Security was tight as his trial started, with reports saying there were hundreds of police blocking the area.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Microblog posts from his supporters said they were beaten by police, Reuters news agency reports.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>The Guangdong-based paper, also known as the Southern Weekend, became embroiled in a censorship row in January 2013 with local party officials after the wording of a New Year message calling for reform was changed.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Mr Liu is also being charged with falsely reporting capital in a business registration, according to the Associated Press (AP) news agency.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Meanwhile, a lawyer of another prominent activist, Xu Zhiyong, told Reuters he was notified by officials that his client&#8217;s verdict would be on Sunday.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Mr Xu was arrested in July 2013 over &#8220;gathering crowds to disrupt public order&#8221; charges and went on trial on Wednesday<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>His lawyer, Zhang Qingfang, told AP this meant the case of Mr Xu was &#8220;decided even before the trial&#8221;.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Xu Zhiyong is a prominent human rights lawyer who campaigned against corruption in China.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div>&nbsp;<strong style=\"font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', 'Lucida Grande', 'Segoe UI', Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, sans-serif;
