{"id":38493,"date":"2014-03-05T19:22:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-05T19:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=38493 "},"modified":"2014-03-05T19:22:00","modified_gmt":"2014-03-05T19:22:00","slug":"38493-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=38493","title":{"rendered":"Ai Weiwei supporters pressure Berlin for passport\\&#8217;s return"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div><div>BERLIN Wed Mar 5, 2014 1:50pm EST<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2014\/9\/201435%E4%B8%8B%E8%BD%BD(5).jpg\" alt=\"201435\u4e0b\u8f7d(5).jpg (580&#215;385)\" \/><\/div><div><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div>(Reuters) &#8211; German supporters of Ai Weiwei, one of China&#8217;s most famous political dissidents, urged Berlin on Wednesday to demand the return of the artist&#8217;s passport before an exhibition of politically-charged works in Germany&#8217;s capital.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>The exhibition, scheduled to open in Berlin&#8217;s Martin-Gropius-Bau on April 3, falls exactly three years after Ai&#8217;s arrest and detention by Chinese authorities in 2011.<\/div><div><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div>The Chinese government retained Ai&#8217;s passport after his release but has not brought any charges against him, said Berlin-based lawyer Peter Raue, who visited Ai in Beijing last month.<\/div><div><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div>&#8220;We firmly insist that our government make this an issue,&#8221; said Klaus Staeck, president of the Academy of Arts Berlin, adding he hoped that academy member Ai would be able to attend the annual assembly on May 8-10 in Berlin.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Ai has long attracted international attention for criticizing the Chinese government&#8217;s record on democracy, free speech and human rights.
