Security guards stand outside her home and she is prevented from communicating freely with the outside world &#8211; the police have banned her from making or receiving phone calls or accessing the internet.<\/p><p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; margin-bottom: 1.7em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.799999237060547px; background-color: #ffffff;\">Liu Xia&#8217;s husband is political activist Dr Liu Xiaobo. He was taken away by police on 8 December 2008, two days before he intended to launch a pro-democracy manifesto with a group of other activists.<\/p><p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; margin-bottom: 1.7em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.799999237060547px; background-color: #ffffff;\">In December 2009, after his formal arrest on suspicion of &#8216;inciting subversion&#8217; he was sentenced to 11 years in prison and a further two years deprivation of political rights.<\/p><p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; margin-bottom: 1.7em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.799999237060547px; background-color: #ffffff;\">In October 2010, Liu Xiaobo became the first Chinese citizen to be awarded the Nobel Peace Price for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights.<\/p><p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; margin-bottom: 1.7em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.799999237060547px; background-color: #ffffff;\">Health concerns<br \/>Liu Xia had a heart attack in January this year. She was admitted to hospital for emergency treatment but was returned home again against the advice of her doctor.<\/p><p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; margin-bottom: 1.7em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.799999237060547px; background-color: #ffffff;\">In early February she was taken to hospital again under police escort and diagnosed with a heart condition. Her doctors said Liu Xia needed more treatment, so her family completed all the necessary forms and paid the hospital fees. However the hospital refused to admit her and she was returned home.<\/p><p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; margin-bottom: 1.7em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.799999237060547px; background-color: #ffffff;\">For some time Liu Xia was refused treatment that she desperately needed &#8211; for her heart condition and severe depression.
