{"id":43540,"date":"2014-11-15T17:02:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-15T17:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=43540 "},"modified":"2014-11-15T17:02:00","modified_gmt":"2014-11-15T17:02:00","slug":"43540-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=43540","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong protest leaders denied Beijing flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>15 November 2014 Last updated at 06:37 ET<\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Three pro-democracy student leaders from Hong Kong have been stopped from boarding a plane to Beijing.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>They had hoped to meet China&#8217;s leaders as part of their push for greater democracy, but were told at the airport that their travel permits were invalid.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Protesters have been camped out on the streets of the territory since late September.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>They want Beijing to allow more candidates to stand in the territory&#8217;s next leadership election in 2017.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>The group were greeted at the airport by fellow democracy activists, who unfurled yellow umbrellas &#8211; a symbol of Hong Kong&#8217;s democracy movement.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div>&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2014\/46\/20141115_79005557_79005556.jpg\" alt=\"20141115_79005557_79005556.jpg (624&#215;351)\" \/><\/div><div><\/div><div>The three Hong Kong protest leaders speak to the media before attempting to board the plane<\/div><div><\/div><div>The group was mobbed by other protesters and the media before trying to board the flight<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>They were led by Alex Chow, who heads the Hong Kong Federation of Students, which has played a key role mobilising the protests<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>The three said they wanted to talk directly with national leaders because so far, the Hong Kong government has told them it is powerless to offer them any concessions.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>A spokeswoman for the students said they were prevent from getting on the plane because their return permits had been cancelled.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Beijing has in the past blocked Hong Kong activists from travelling to mainland China.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>&#8216;Naive&#8217;<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>The BBC&#8217;s John Sudworth in China says few observers thought the student leaders had any chance of making it out of the arrival hall at Beijing airport, let alone securing a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.<\/div><div><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div>An editorial in China&#8217;s state-run Global Times, written before the activists were stopped, said the group were &#8220;naive&#8221;.<\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div>Hong Kong&#8217;s Occupy Central movement had &#8220;failed&#8221;, the editorial concluded.
