\u5c3d\u7ba1\u5965\u8fd0\u4f1a\u7684\u5f00\u5e55\u6807\u5fd7\u7740\u8fd9\u4e00\u8fd0\u52a8\u7684\u7ed3\u675f\uff0c\u4f46\u5173\u4e8e\u902e\u6355\u3001\u5173\u62bc\u3001\u6298\u78e8\u7684\u8bb0\u5f55\u5c06\u6210\u4e3a\u4e2d\u56fd\u80cc\u5f03\u627f\u8bfa\u7684\u8bc1\u636e\uff0c\u5b83\u5c06\u5728\u5965\u8fd0\u4f1a\u7ed3\u675f\u3001\u4e16\u754c\u7684\u5173\u6ce8\u53d1\u751f\u8f6c\u79fb\u5f88\u4e45\u4e4b\u540e\u8861\u91cf\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba\u6c11\u8868\u8fbe\u81ea\u7531\u53d7\u5230\u7684\u4fb5\u5bb3\u3002<\/SPAN><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/P>\r\n

\u201cWe are here to make sure that the world does not forget, in all the Olympic fervor, that there are 45 of our colleagues in Chinese prisons on this day,\u201d said Francine Prose, president of PEN American Center, \u201cWe want our colleagues and their families to know that they are not forgotten today and will not be forgotten when the Olympics are over.\u201d<\/SPAN> <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/P>\r\n

Bringing Down the Great Firewall of China: Silenced Writers Speak on the Eve of the Olympics <\/SPAN><\/B>was the culminating event of PEN\u2019s eight-month long \u201cWe Are Ready for Freedom of Expression\u201d campaign. The campaign, led by three centers of International PEN (PEN Canada, PEN American Center and the Independent Chinese PEN Center), challenged the Chinese government to release all writers and journalists currently imprisoned in China, and to guarantee freedom of the press before, during, and after the Olympic Games. <\/SPAN> <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/P>\r\n

\u201cOn the eve of the Beijing Olympics, the promise that China<\/st1:country-region> made seven years ago to improve human rights is unfulfilled,\u201d said Dr. Liu Xiaobo, board member of the Independent<\/st1:PlaceName> Chinese<\/st1:PlaceName> PEN<\/st1:PlaceName> Center<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place>. \u201cThere are still controls on speech, still frequent imprisonments of writers for their writings, and still the fear that every bush and tree is an enemy.\u201d <\/SPAN> <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/P>\r\n

Although the start of the Olympics formally marks the end of the campaign, the record of arrest, imprisonment and harassment stands as an indelible record of China<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s broken promises.
