{"id":57902,"date":"2016-07-20T21:05:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-20T21:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=57902 "},"modified":"2016-07-20T21:05:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T21:05:00","slug":"57902-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=57902","title":{"rendered":"China\\&#8217;s media criticises anti-US protests at KFC outlets as jingoistic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">20 July 2016<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Chinese state media has criticised anti-US protests outside KFC outlets across China as jingoistic, saying they do &#8220;a disservice to the nation&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The protesters are angry about an international tribunal ruling rejecting China&#8217;s territorial claims in the South China Sea.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The case was brought by the Philippines, a US ally which has a competing claim in the area.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">State newspapers said the authorities were &#8220;calling for rational patriotism&#8221;.<\/span><\/p><div>\u00a0<\/div>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">KFC has more than 4,000 branches in China and is often seen as a symbol of US influence in the country.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2016\/28\/2016720_90456406_9d1158f2gw1f5za5m6szij20dc0nq40v.jpg\" alt=\"2016720_90456406_9d1158f2gw1f5za5m6szij20dc0nq40v.jpg (624\u00d7351)\" \/><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8216;Get out of China, Kentucky and McDonalds&#8217;, reads this banner<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Not huge, but animated.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In recent days, small groups of protesters have gathered outside KFC outlets, starting in Hebei and spreading to other places including Changsha and Hangzhou, media reports said.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They have shouted anti-US slogans and held up banners with the words &#8220;Get out of China, KFC and McDonalds&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In some of the videos of protests which were posted to Sina Weibo, police can be seen intervening.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">What have state media said?<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The state Xinhua news agency said: &#8220;This is not the right way to express patriotism.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The China Daily newspaper said: &#8220;Instead of being patriotic, it is their jingoism that does a disservice to the spirit of devotion to the nation.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;Those who organise such activities without going through the necessary procedures and unlawfully harass others in the name of patriotism should be held accountable according to the law.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Both the China Daily and the People&#8217;s Daily newspaper said police and media organisations were &#8220;calling for rational patriotism&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In China, protesting without seeking permission from the authorities is forbidden.<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But what does KFC have to do with the tribunal?<\/span><\/p>  <p>\u00a0<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nothing.
