{"id":61865,"date":"2016-02-29T22:58:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T22:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=61865 "},"modified":"2016-02-29T22:58:00","modified_gmt":"2016-02-29T22:58:00","slug":"61865-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=61865","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong protests student leaders go on trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">29 February 2016<\/span><\/p><div>&nbsp;<\/div>  <p>&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2016\/8\/2016229_88494005_gettyimages-505346048.jpg\" alt=\"2016229_88494005_gettyimages-505346048.jpg (660&#215;439)\" \/><\/p><div>&nbsp;<\/div>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Joshua Wong (right) and Alex Chow (left) were among the prominent faces of the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Three prominent student leaders in Hong Kong have gone on trial for their roles in 2014&#8217;s mass pro-democracy protests.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Joshua Wong, Alex Chow and Nathan Law pleaded not guilty to charges of taking part, and inciting others to take part, in an unlawful assembly.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The three are accused of breaking into a government compound during a student protest in September 2014.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Images of them being forcibly removed by police, and allegations of abuse, sparked huge demonstrations.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The trial is expected to last for a week.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">&#8216;No political prosecution&#8217;<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The trial has prompted an expression of concern from the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China which monitors human rights development.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Its chairman, Chris Smith, said the trial was &#8220;nothing more than political muscle flexing, targeting those who dared to stand up for freedom and democracy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">On Monday the Hong Kong government responded saying: &#8220;When making a prosecutorial decision, the Department (of Justice) does not take into account any political considerations and there is no question of political prosecution whatsoever.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">It added that the commission&#8217;s remarks were &#8220;inappropriate&#8221; as the legal case was ongoing, and added that &#8220;no foreign governments&#8221; should intervene in Hong Kong trials.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">In September 2014, tens of thousands occupied major streets in the city&#8217;s Central district in the weeks following the students&#8217;
