{"id":62282,"date":"2016-03-15T22:30:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-15T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=62282 "},"modified":"2016-03-15T22:30:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-15T22:30:00","slug":"62282-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=62282","title":{"rendered":"Chinese media typo calls President Xi Jinping the \\&#8217;last leader\\&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br style=\"font-size: 12pt;\" \/><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">14 March 2016<\/span><\/p><div>&nbsp;<\/div>  <p>&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2016\/10\/2016315D3D0CC9E-405E-4FD6-BCCB-9394CA005DAF_cx0_cy2_cw0_mw1024_s_n_r1.jpg\" alt=\"2016315D3D0CC9E-405E-4FD6-BCCB-9394CA005DAF_cx0_cy2_cw0_mw1024_s_n_r1.jpg (640&#215;360)\" \/><\/p><div>&nbsp;<\/div>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">China&#8217;s state news agency has had to issue a correction after it referred to President Xi Jinping as &#8220;China&#8217;s last leader&#8221;, an apparent copyediting error.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Xinhua later amended the copy, which had by then been widely reused, and asked outlets to change the reference to &#8220;China&#8217;s top leader&#8221;.<\/span><\/div><div><\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In the end many outlets simply removed Sunday&#8217;s article in its entirety.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Such a mishap is extremely rare as references to China&#8217;s president are believed to be closely scrutinised.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Chinese media is heavily regulated, with government censors often removing content on websites and social media.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The two phrases are just one character different, but are pronounced very differently.<\/span><\/div><div><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The error comes as the government exerts increasingly strict control on the media. Similar mistakes in the past have had serious consequences for the journalists involved.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In December, four journalists were suspended after the China News Service &#8211; also controlled by the ruling party &#8211; accidentally reported President Xi&#8217;s &#8220;resignation&#8221; (ci zhi), instead of &#8220;speech&#8221; (zhi ci), during a tour of Africa.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Censorship and arrests of journalists are on the rise and in 2015 China put 29 journalists behind bars, for a variety of alleged offences.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Mr Xi recently toured newsrooms in Beijing, calling for &#8220;absolute loyalty&#8221; to the Communist Party.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But just last week prominent Chinese financial magazine Caixin highlighted censorship of its content, in a rare and defiant move against the government.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It claimed on Monday, in an article published on its English-language website, that censors had deleted an interview on the issue of free speech.
