{"id":66118,"date":"2016-08-11T17:59:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-11T17:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=66118 "},"modified":"2016-08-11T17:59:00","modified_gmt":"2016-08-11T17:59:00","slug":"66118-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=66118","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Police Detain Eight Ethnic Mongolians Amid Dispute Over Grassland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">2016-08-10&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p><div>&nbsp;<\/div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2016\/31\/20168109c684fd6-d123-4b65-aab7-7095d13ffbb9.jpeg\" alt=\"20168109c684fd6-d123-4b65-aab7-7095d13ffbb9.jpeg (622&#215;467)\" \/><br \/><div>&nbsp;<\/div>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ethnic Mongolian herders from Ubuurbarag village hold up a banner at a protest in Inner Mongolia&#8217;s eastern Shin-Barag Left Banner, Aug. 10, 2016.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&nbsp;Photo provided by a herder.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Chinese authorities in the northern region of Inner Mongolia have detained eight people in an eviction operation targeting a group of ethnic Mongolian herders and driving them from their summer pastures, activists and local residents said on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ethnic Mongolian herders in the northern Chinese region of Inner Mongolia on Tuesday penned an open letter to the the regional government amid a bitter land dispute that has sparked violent clashes with the authorities in recent weeks.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Herders from Ubuurbarag village in Inner Mongolia&#8217;s eastern Shin-Barag Left Banner had called on the regional government to intervene to protect them after alleged attacks that left local residents injured and their livestock dead.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But the authorities moved on Wednesday to evict both herders and their livestock from the disputed land, which herders say they have grazed for generations under a legal contract with the government.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Police detained Saayanchirlat, Huubshalat, Bazhma, Baayurt, Sirgulen, Arbuden, Haajirmut and Chimurg, local residents told RFA.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Bazhma&#8217;s sister-in-law said she was detained at around 9.00 a.m. on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;I got a call from people at the scene saying that my sister-in-law had been taken away by police,&#8221; said the woman, who declined to be named.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;Her kid is just eight months old, and there were a few other women they took, too.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;They detained eight people in total,&#8221; she said, adding: &#8220;There were more than 100 herders gathered there late last night.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Another herder who didn&#8217;t give his name said local officials had admitted that the herders had the right to use the grassland.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;They sent around a dozen vehicles this morning to detain people, then the banner police left, leaving six or seven vehicles,&#8221; he said, adding: &#8220;Eight herders were detained.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8216;Ethnic cleansing&#8217;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The head of the government had visited the herders on Tuesday night, he said.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;He said that the grasslands do indeed belong to our collective farm, but that we had to move out anyway, as soon as possible.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;The police told us we had 15 minutes to leave, when they came this morning.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ethnic Mongolian rights activist Xinna said eviction work is still under way.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;There is still chaos at the scene, because the eviction work isn&#8217;t complete,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The detentions prompted several dozen herders to gather outside the banner, or county-level, police department calling for the release of the detainees.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Security is now &#8220;very tight&#8221; in the region, Xinna said.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;They have been detaining people, beating them up, and confiscating their cell phones, so they can&#8217;t get any information to the outside world,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Xinna&#8217;s husband, veteran Mongolian rights campaigner Hada, said the evictions are part of a calculated program of ethnic cleansing in the region.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;The aim of the Han Chinese is very clear,&#8221;
