{"id":70330,"date":"2017-01-25T14:16:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T14:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=70330 "},"modified":"2017-01-25T14:16:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T14:16:00","slug":"70330-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=70330","title":{"rendered":"Netflix to feature documentary on HK activist Joshua Wong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">24 January 2017<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2017\/3\/2017125E8B6AE11-71A9-489B-BCC0-B7A1922B2E3C_w987_r1_s.jpg\" alt=\"2017125E8B6AE11-71A9-489B-BCC0-B7A1922B2E3C_w987_r1_s.jpg (550&#215;309)\" \/><br \/><p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Video-streaming giant Netflix has acquired the distribution rights for a documentary about Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The film chronicles his political life focusing on his role in the 2014 protests which made him an icon at 16.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hong Kong<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8216;s so-called Umbrella Movement demanded universal suffrage for the semi-autonomous Chinese territory.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Currently, the leader of the city is elected by a 1,200 member committee, seen as pro-Beijing.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In unprecedented scenes, the 2014 protests saw the streets of central Hong Kong filled and blocked by angry crowds demanding a fully democratic selection process.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">At the time Joshua Wong, one of the student leaders, was held up as the unofficial &#8220;poster boy&#8221; of the movement and even made it to the cover of Time Magazine.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The documentary will be available to Netflix&#8217;s 93 million subscribers worldwide, but not in China where the service is not available.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hong Kong&#8217;s democracy debate<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">PIs this proof Hong  Kong&#8217;s &#8216;Umbrella Protests&#8217; failed?<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;Courage, resilience and youthful idealism&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The deal was announced days after the premiere of &#8220;Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower&#8221; at the Sundance Film Festival on 20 January.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Directed by Joe Piscatella, the documentary follows Mr Wong, now 20-years-old, from 2012 to 2016.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">After winning no concessions from the Chinese government, Mr Wong&#8217;s latest political move has been the establishment of his political party &#8220;Demosisto&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In a press release, Netflix describes the documentary as &#8220;a remarkable portrait of courage, resilience and youthful idealism&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;In an era where we are witnessing heightened civic participation and freedom of expression, we are pleased to offer a global platform for audiences to engage on these issues,&#8221; says Netflix VP of Original Documentaries Lisa Nishimura.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Andrew Duncan, one of the documentary&#8217;s producers, says: &#8220;Their global platform will allow us to share Joshua&#8217;s message about the importance of due process of law and freedom of speech with a worldwide audience.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">According to Hollywood Reporter, the rights were sold &#8220;in the low-seven-figure range&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In a letter to shareholders dated October 17, 2016, Netflix said: &#8220;We now plan to license content to existing online service providers in China rather than operate our own service in China in the near term.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;The regulatory environment for foreign digital content services in China has become challenging.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Netflix said it hoped to launch the service in China eventually, but did not say when.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><br \/><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-china-38727842\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">For detail please visit here<\/span><\/a><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&lt;p&gt;The film chronicles his political life focusing on his role in the 2014 protests which made him an icon at 16.
