{"id":75311,"date":"2017-07-15T17:03:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-15T17:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=75311 "},"modified":"2017-07-15T17:03:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-15T17:03:00","slug":"75311-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=75311","title":{"rendered":"New Citizens Movement Leader Xu Zhiyong Released From Prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">July 15, 2017<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2017\/29\/2017722xu-zhiyong.jpg\" alt=\"2017722xu-zhiyong.jpg (402&#215;298)\" \/><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Xu zhiyongDr. Xu Zhiyong (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \u5b8b\u4f53; font-size: 12pt;\">\u8bb8\u5fd7\u6c38<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">), leader of the New Citizens Movement, was released from prison on July 15, after serving a 4-year sentence.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Xu Zhiyong<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \u5b8b\u4f53; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8217;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">s defense lawyer Zhang Qingfang (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \u5b8b\u4f53; font-size: 12pt;\">\u5f20\u5e86\u65b9<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">) confirmed that Dr. Xu has returned home in Beijing. He was picked up earlier by the security police, a source said.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Yesterday, scores of citizens traveled to the vicinity of Kenhua Prison in Ninghe District in Tianjin where Xu Zhiyong had been imprisoned since he was sentenced in February 2014. Dr. Xu, 44 years old, is a legal scholar and the founder of Gongmeng, a civil society group that pioneered China&#8217;s &#8220;rights defense movement&#8221; and in recent years campaigned for equal education rights for migrant workers&#8217; children in large cities, and engaged in citizen activism under the banner &#8220;Freedom, Justice, and Love.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The crackdown on the New Citizens Movement began in April 2013. Xu Zhiyong was arrested in July 2013.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Friends who tried to visit Xu this morning were blocked by three plainclothes security agents at the entrance of his residential compound. It&#8217;s unclear whether Dr. Xu will be placed under some kind of restriction in his movement and communications &#8212; illegal but common practices used by the Chinese government against leading dissidents.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Yesterday, activists who went to the prison to welcome Dr. Xu found that the roads around the prison were closed, allowing only inbound traffic. During the night, police raided the guest rooms of the activists.
