{"id":78279,"date":"2017-11-08T10:57:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-08T10:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=78279 "},"modified":"2017-11-08T10:57:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T10:57:00","slug":"78279-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=78279","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong Democracy Activists Win Last Chance to Appeal Jail Terms in Highest Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">November 07, 2017 0:37 AM<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2017\/44\/20171178DDD08BA-FC74-4037-B0AA-F2D2AFB9DA78_cx0_cy1_cw0_w1023_r1_s.jpg\" alt=\"20171178DDD08BA-FC74-4037-B0AA-F2D2AFB9DA78_cx0_cy1_cw0_w1023_r1_s.jpg (500&#215;281)\" \/><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Pro-democracy activists take part in a protest on China&#8217;s National Day in Hong Kong, China, Oct. 1, 2017.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">HONG KONG &#8212; An appeal against the controversial jailing of three young democracy activists will be heard in Hong Kong&#8217;s highest court in January, after the Court of Final Appeal decided on Tuesday to allow it.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hong Kong<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8216;s appeals court jailed Joshua Wong, 21, Alex Chow, 27, and Nathan Law, 24, leaders of the Chinese-ruled city&#8217;s democracy movement, in August, for illegal assembly.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They are serving six, seven and eight-month jail terms, respectively.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Their sentencing came as a blow to the youth-led push for universal suffrage and prompted accusations of political interference.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The trio helped lead the largely peaceful &#8220;Umbrella Movement&#8221; that blocked major roads for 79 days in 2014, demanding Beijing grant Hong  Kong full democracy.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hong Kong has been governed under a &#8220;one country, two systems&#8221; formula since its return from British to Chinese rule in 1997, allowing freedoms not enjoyed on mainland China that include an independent judiciary.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In a short hearing on Tuesday, Hong Kong&#8217;s Court of Final Appeal granted the trio leave to appeal, with the case to be heard on January 16 and the trio granted bail till then.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The next legal steps will likely be scrutinized closely, with the jailing having shaken confidence in Hong Kong&#8217;s vaunted rule of law.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Wong, Chow and Law were sentenced last year to community service for unlawful assembly.
