Dear Excellency,<\/span><\/p>

The recent report of Your Excellency praising China as a great implementer of the Church’s social doctrine makes one think that you have imbibed too much sacramental wine before Mass or have attended a Disney World China Pavilion.<\/span><\/p>

 <\/p>

You did not comment on the shantytowns in the country; the use of drugs; the jails full of drug dealers and political dissidents; the closing and destruction of Catholic Churches; the new rules concerning religion put in place on February 1; the continuing “cleansing” of the “low end” population of Beijing itself.<\/span><\/p>

 <\/p>

Instead, you praised China: “I met an extraordinary China: what people don’t realize is that the central value in China is work, work, work. There’s no other way, fundamentally it is like St Paul said: he who doesn’t work, doesn’t eat”. “You do not have shantytowns, you do not have drugs, young people do not take drugs”. Instead, there is a “positive national conscience”.<\/span><\/p>

 <\/p>

In other words, the Chinese have no human rights and must work or perish and must live at the whims of the government. This smacks of a certain European racial arrogance on your part which characterized the social fabric of Europe before the Second World War. The world remembers the saying above the gate at Auschwitz: “work sets you free”.<\/span><\/p>

 <\/p>
