{"id":84008,"date":"2018-06-15T14:01:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-15T14:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:10081\/?p=84008 "},"modified":"2018-06-15T14:01:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-15T14:01:00","slug":"84008-revision-v1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minzhuzhongguo.org\/?p=84008","title":{"rendered":"Funeral of Chinese Activist Canceled Amid Doubts About Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">2018-06-15<\/span><\/p><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div>&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mzzg.org\/UploadCenter\/ArticlePics\/2018\/24\/2018615image.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Zhang Wuzhou holds a placard demanding an end to an unauthorized post-mortem of her brother Zhang Liumao, a Chinese rights activist who died in jail in November 2015, in a personal protest, Dec. 2, 2015.<\/span><\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Photo courtesy of the Zhang family<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Authorities in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong on Friday canceled the funeral of a rights activist who died in police custody in 2015, after his family members had arrived at the funeral home.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Zhang Liumao died while in custody at the Guangzhou No. 3 Detention Center on Nov. 4, 2015, with his family reporting that his body showed multiple signs of severe physical assault.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Relatives and a lawyer who viewed Zhang&#8217;s body said there were marks on it consistent with torture.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">His lawyer Tan Chenzhou reported seeing evidence of serious injuries at the time, including rectangular marks and curved, bloodied areas, and possible signs of a broken arm.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Local authorities dispatched large numbers of state security police and uniformed police to the Galaxy Cemetery in Guangzhou on Friday and canceled the scheduled cremation.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">When Zhang&#8217;s sister Zhang Weichu arrived at the crematorium, she was told that that the funeral couldn&#8217;t go ahead.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;There are more than a dozen of them in the main hall, and the same number in the open space outside,&#8221; Zhang told RFA on Friday. &#8220;The staff at the funeral home said we should talk to the police [about why it wasn&#8217;t going ahead].&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She added: &#8220;We have followed all the rules.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She said the dispute over the manner of her brother&#8217;s death hasn&#8217;t been resolved.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;If the truth is really what they say, they can put out the video of [my brother] before he died,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Repeated calls to the funeral home failed to connect on Friday.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8216;I was devastated&#8217;<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Another sister, Zhang Wuzhou, who traveled from the central province of Hubei to attend the cremation, said she was devastated by the decision.<\/span><\/p>  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>  <p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;I thought of my brother and I was devastated,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I had thought that if they brought me to Guangzhou, they would let me see my brother one last time.
