A young man from Canada called Michael Martin Day had come from Beijing to my home in Sichuan. Together we produced the voice cassette recording of my dramatic reading of my long poem \u201cMassacre\/Slaughter\u201d on a large Kangli-brand tape recorder. At the time I hadn\u2019t yet learned how to drink, however Michael and the underground poet Li Yawei drank a lot.<br \/><br \/>\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Amid [my memory of] the cries and gunshots on the BBC over the shortwave radio, I recited the poem three times, while Michael and Yawei banged on bowls and bottles. Then, on the music cassette\u2019s case, I wrote The Age of Protest. We repeatedly recorded the same segments of my reading with music, thereby creating an echo effect between the start and the end of the recording. The opening inscription for the poem was: \u201cI wish to present this poem to the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution; I would like to offer this poem to the 70th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement of China; I would like to offer this poem to the victims of the June 3rd Massacre.\u201d<br \/><br \/>\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Later, this \u201cMassacre\u201d cassette was circulated to over 20 cities in China. Over 30 of those who spread it around the country were arrested and interrogated, of which 6 were imprisoned for over two years, Michael was expelled from the country as a spy, and as the main culprit, I was sentenced to 4 years for \u201cinstigating counter-revolutionary propaganda\u201d.<br \/><br \/>\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Thirty years later, on the evening of May 7th, at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in the vicinity of Columbia University in New York City, Humanitarian China and PEN America will jointly host a memorial for the Tian\u2019anmen Massacre, entitled Rise Up: Tiananmen\u2019s Legacy of Freedom and Democracy. Among those who will take the stage to read poetry or sing are witnesses such as Wang Dan, Fang Zheng, Zhang Boli, Ma Jian, and Zhou Fengsuo. Michael and I will be on stage together, reciting the poem \u201cMassacre\u201d in English and Chinese, with me foregrounding and backgrounding the reading with a Tibetan prayer bowl, a bamboo flute, a thumb piano, an abacus, and my voice. According to Chinese law, this will be the second time in 30 years we\u2019ve \u201ccommitted a joint offence\u201d, a vicious crime deserving of heavy punishment.<br \/><br \/>\u00a0<br \/><br \/>30\u5e74\u524d\u76846\u67084\u65e5\u51cc\u6668\uff0c\u5929\u5b89\u95e8\u5927\u5c60\u6740\u53d1\u751f\uff0c\u4e00\u4e2a\u53eb\u6234\u8fc8\u6cb3\u7684\u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u9752\u5e74\u4ece\u5317\u4eac\u6765\u5230\u56db\u5ddd\u6211\u5bb6\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u4e00\u5757\u5236\u4f5c\u4e86\u957f\u8bd7\u300a\u5927\u5c60\u6740\u300b\u6717\u8bf5\u78c1\u5e26\uff0c\u7528\u4e00\u53f0\u4f53\u79ef\u5f88\u5927\u7684\u201c\u5eb7\u4e3d\u724c\u201d\u6536\u5f55\u673a\u3002\u90a3\u65f6\u6211\u4e0d\u4f1a\u559d\u9152\uff0c\u4f46\u6234\u8fc8\u6cb3\u4e0e\u5730\u4e0b\u8bd7\u4eba\u674e\u4e9a\u4f1f\u559d\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\u70c8\u9152\u3002<br \/><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u5728\u6536\u97f3\u673a\u77ed\u6ce2\u4f20\u51fa\u7684\u67aa\u58f0\u548c\u60e8\u53eb\u4e2d\uff0c\u6211\u6717\u8bf5\u4e86\u4e09\u6b21\uff0c\u6234\u8fc8\u6cb3\u548c\u674e\u4e9a\u4f1f\u7838\u4e86\u9152\u74f6\u548c\u9152\u7897\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u558a\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\u6b21\u201c\u6211\u6297\u8bae\u201d\u3002\u8fd8\u5728\u78c1\u5e26\u5c01\u9762\u5199\u4e86\u300a\u6297\u8bae\u7684\u65f6\u4ee3\u300b\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u5c06\u540c\u4e00\u6bb5\u6717\u8bf5\u548c\u97f3\u4e50\u53cd\u590d\u78be\u5f55\uff0c\u4ee5\u5236\u9020\u7247\u5934\u548c\u7247\u5c3e\u7684\u56de\u97f3\u6548\u679c\u3002\u5f00\u5934\u9898\u8f9e\u4e3a\uff1a\u201c\u8c28\u4ee5\u6b64\u8bd7\u732e\u7ed9\u6cd5\u56fd\u5927\u9769\u547d200\u5468\u5e74\uff1b\u8c28\u4ee5\u6b64\u8bd7\u732e\u7ed9\u4e2d\u56fd\u4e94\u56db\u8fd0\u52a870\u5468\u5e74\uff1b\u8c28\u4ee5\u6b64\u8bd7\u732e\u7ed9\u516d\u4e09\u60e8\u6848\u7684\u6b7b\u96be\u8005\u3002\u201d<\/div><br \/>\u540e\u6765\u8fd9\u76d8\u300a\u5927\u5c60\u6740\u300b\u78c1\u5e26\u6d41\u4f20\u5230\u4e2d\u56fd20\u591a\u4e2a\u57ce\u5e02\u3002\u670930\u591a\u4e2a\u4f20\u64ad\u8005\u88ab\u902e\u6355\u548c\u5ba1\u8baf\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d6\u4eba\u88ab\u5173\u62bc\u4e24\u5e74\u4ee5\u4e0a\uff0c\u6234\u8fc8\u6cb3\u88ab\u5f53\u4f5c\u201c\u95f4\u8c0d\u201d\u9a71\u9010\u51fa\u5883\uff0c\u6211\u4f5c\u4e3a\u9996\u72af\uff0c\u4ee5\u201c\u53cd\u9769\u547d\u5ba3\u4f20\u717d\u52a8\u7f6a\u201d\uff0c\u5224\u52114\u5e74\u3002<br \/><br \/>30\u5e74\u540e\u76845\u67087\u65e5\u508d\u665a\uff0c\u5728\u7ebd\u7ea6\u54e5\u4f26\u6bd4\u4e9a\u5927\u5b66\u9644\u8fd1\u7684\u5723\u7ea6\u7ff0\u5927\u6559\u5802\uff0c\u4eba\u9053\u4e2d\u56fd\u548c\u7f8e\u56fd\u7b14\u4f1a\u8054\u5408\u4e3e\u529e\u5929\u5b89\u95e8\u5927\u5c60\u6740\u7eaa\u5ff5\uff0c\u767b\u53f0\u6717\u8bf5\u548c\u6b4c\u5531\u7684\u6709\u89c1\u8bc1\u4eba\u738b\u4e39\u3001\u65b9\u653f\u3001\u5f20\u4f2f\u7b20\u3001\u9a6c\u5efa\u3001\u5468\u950b\u9501\u7b49\u7b49\u3002\u6211\u548c\u6234\u8fc8\u6cb3\u5c06\u540c\u53f0\uff0c\u4e00\u5757\u7528\u82f1\u6587\u548c\u4e2d\u6587\u6717\u8bf5\u957f\u8bd7\u300a\u5927\u5c60\u6740\u300b\uff0c\u5e76\u4ea4\u66ff\u4ee5\u897f\u85cf\u8f6c\u7ecf\u94b5\u3001\u6d1e\u7bab\u3001\u59c6\u6307\u7434\u3001\u7b97\u76d8\u3001\u4eba\u58f0\u4f5c\u4e3a\u80cc\u666f\u548c\u524d\u666f\u3002\u6309\u7167\u4e2d\u56fd\u6cd5\u5f8b\uff0c\u8fd9\u662f\u76f8\u969430\u5e74\u76842\u6b21\u201c\u5171\u540c\u72af\u7f6a\u201d\uff0c\u60c5\u8282\u6076\u52a3\uff0c\u91cf\u5211\u4ece\u91cd\u3002<br \/><br \/>\u4eb2\u7231\u7684\u670b\u53cb\u4eec\uff0c\u300a\u5406\u5c38\u4eba\u300b\u300a\u4e0a\u5e1d\u662f\u7ea2\u8272\u7684\u300b\u300a\u4e3a\u4e86\u4e00\u9996\u6b4c\u548c\u4e00\u767e\u9996\u6b4c\u300b\u53ca\u300a\u5b50\u5f39\u9e26\u7247\u300b\u7684\u8bfb\u8005\u4eec\uff0c\u8bf7\u5230\u573a\u652f\u6301\u6211\u4eec\uff0c\u62d2\u7edd\u9057\u5fd8\u3002<br
