The warm weather has caused most people to take off their sweaters.
\nAs a rule of thumb, the weather repeats itself until the actual summer
\nseason. It turns cooler after a spring shower, but the temperature soon
\nrises again, people put on fewer clothes, and the heat takes over the city.
\nAs the petals fall, the green buds cover the enchanting branches of
\nthe peach trees. The three towns of Wuhan city, located at the confluence
\nof the Yangtze River and Han River, are vibrant with life. Since the
\nWuchang Uprising, like Shanghai, which is located on another side of the
\nYangtze River, Wuhan has gained fame and become the most important
\ncultural and economic town in modern China.
\nToday Wuhan is struggling to survive the plague at an extremely
\nhigh cost, but this disaster is not the first, nor will it be the last for the
\ncity.
\nWe deserve a huge monument engraved with the names of each of
\nthe dead, a record of our sobs and sins, and the thoughts, confessions,
\nand hopes of those who have survived. Without this, we cannot appease
\nthe soul of this city and erase the foul smell of blood and tears.
\nGreatness must be based on a heavy foundation. The noble
\ncharacters must grow and come out of the hardship of living.
\nModernity and civilization, like the term’s concession, modern,
\ntango, soap, perfume, stock, whiskey, made in Hanyang, flying tigers,
\nsailors, etc., are not unfamiliar to Wuhan, a city characterized by pier
\nculture, and the people living here, but very familiar. And all of this ends
\nabruptly one day, then sinks until it resurfaces, gasping for breath, telling
\nthe story of the past, vivid like the sweet red between the dark green.
\nI am a nostalgic person, and these days my eyes are only willing to
\nintercept that period full of gray and light. Before it is too blurred, after
\nit is too familiar, that is how I escape the tears, the relentless clamor, the
\nshouting.<\/p>\n

When I opened the long-closed window, the river breeze greeted
\nme, do did the familiar sound of the whistle.
\nThe people’s park next to the National Government building, the
\ntwists and turns of Clerical Alley, the crazy life behind the bronze statue
\nof Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the undercurrents along the river docks, the purity of
\nthe Tan Hua Forest, the mysterious alley of Rouge Lane—I still only
\nknown by their names, the smoky smell of Station Road, the crowds, the
\nheart-stopping sound of the train whistle, the whispers of the Great Stage
\nand Yue theatre, the thieves, the vagrants, the children who see cold
\npotatoes and melon seeds. It seems the lakeside is far, far away, the graves
\nof the righteous shrouded in clouds of smoke, the Jiu Nidun……
\nI am a person without complicated ideas. I think we can have all
\nthese all whether you call them the natural order or even the market
\neconomy or whatever. It does not matter. In my world, as long as
\ncommon sense can survive, the city is enough to continue. The rest
\nshould be locked into a box. The reason for that is because we cannot
\nerase it, just as we cannot erase the evil and sin of our hearts.
\nI saw a lot of people swarming the street, men dressed up and
\nwomen in fancy clothes. They seem weightless as if they were coming
\nwith the wind. They were waiting, listening, and the voices seemed from
\ntoo far away, so they listened more attentively …… I’m not sure if they are
\nthe future or the spirits of the long-time dead. I am at the end of a tall
\nbuilding, next to the platform.
\nThis is the end of my pandemic diary. I guess it is the time to say
\nfarewell to my dear readers.
\nI have written a poem about Wuhan city during pandemic. It is
\nactually an elegy- a lament for the dead.
