Xues pledge was carried across state media on Sunday (15 September 2013) in what appeared to be the latest attempt by Beijing to justify its campaign against internet rumours and Big V or verified online celebrities who can command millions of followers. Xue - known as Xue Manzi to his 12 million followers on Sina Weibo told Beijing police that he had made mistakes with his online postings, and held himself out as an example of the need to regulate the internet, according to a Xinhua report. The report featured prominently on major news portals on the mainland on Sunday. Xue told police in a Beijing detention centre that online influence had fuelled his ego, adding that he had misled internet users on various incidents.

薛蛮子忏悔

“看到这样的示众场面,老一代的中国人会相当不安的回忆起毛时代。当时,共产党便对那些真真假假的‘旁门左道者’采用了以‘批评和自我批评’闻名于世的这种手段。当事人被迫思考和忏悔自己的‘错误’,然后公开认罪,最后承认,党完全正确,自己决心痛改前非,要与党的路线彻底保持一致,党对自己的任何惩罚都是应该的。

“薛绝不是在多多少少施压后表示信服国家宣传机器意见的唯一一个著名博主。同样拥有大量拥趸的博客—北京房地产业主潘石屹也受邀在国家电视台接受‘采访’。这位从来不乏自信的企业家表现出一副猥琐样,在面对摄像机谈到自己也赞同政府对互联网采取监控措施时,他竟结巴起来。……

“对所有博主而言,按官方说法是针对互联网上传播谣言行为的新规定犹如一把达摩克里斯剑。……人权组织批评说,新规定用词含糊,任何批评官员的错误、或对政府有所不满的人都可以被追究,因而,它们是对言论自由的沉重打击。”

打击网络言论自由运动的一部分

《南德意志报》“政治”栏目上的一篇署名文章联系到北京、河南,昆明等地新近发生的多起著名博主被逮捕事件强调指出,“薛蛮子”电视“示众”是中共打击网络自由言论运动的组成部分,目的在于保障党在互联网中的话语权:

“上周五,网民宣布当天为‘黑色星期五’,以抗议企业家和慈善家王功权被捕。王亦是一名富裕的投资人,一个佛教徒,一个广受欢迎的博主,而他首先是一个真正致力于实现公民权利的人。他是‘新公民运动’之友。该运动明确要求建立法治国家和公民社会。在其成员今夏公开要求党政干部公示个人财产后,该运动的创始人许志永于7月份被逮捕。当月,王功权在接受香港‘南华早报’采访时曾表示,‘没有违法,没有恶意。我有什么好害怕的?’”
