WEDNESDAY, FEB. 26, 2020
Early in the morning, the rain that had been falling all night finally
stopped, and the temperature dropped, but it was not cold.
Today there are police officers at the gate of the entrance of each
apartment building. Some say they are policemen from other cities. They
withdrew around noon time.
I received a call from a house cleaning maid early in the morning,
saying that her house was out of rice and noodles. It was surprising that
the housekeeper had no food stored in her home when she could go in
and out of the area every day. However, I heard that a grocery store still
had rice for sale on the way to work, so I contacted the cleaning maid
immediately but was told that she had already taken care of it herself.
I seem to have a bit of a shopping compulsion. I want to buy
something whenever I get the chance, not even thinking about money. I
believe this is the expression of internal panic. I envy those cadres of the
authorities for their amazing stability. Their lives, no doubt, are beautiful.
The last two days, the delivery of the courier was busy. A northern
dumpling house is still selling frozen dumplings, 60 yuan a catty. The
owner is from the northeast and is optimistic that the pandemic in Wuhan
will soon be over. Colleagues said that there were more cars on the street
than before. All of this seems to be a sign and corresponds to the media
reports of the pandemic.
Some volunteers were recruited by the government and assigned to
the community service center. They are said to be paid 100 yuan a day,
and their main job is to help residents in the community buy medicine
and provide other services for five hours a day.
Someone from out of town called the community center and asked
for electronic proof of return to Wuhan. The person who answered the
phone felt a bit baffled but later learned from the leader that new rules
had been implemented recently. Community workers act negligently, but
it does not mean that community people do not have a prudent side.
Being tactful and sophisticated have always been the basic skills of those
experienced community workers, who know very well what to say and
what not to say, but of course, there are many silly defects. In recent years,
the community has become very sensitive to the issuance of certificates
for fear of liability. Self-preservation is a human instinct.
The group purchase channel seems to be relatively smooth, but the
high prices make residents dissatisfied. I saw a resident’s group purchase
items: About two pounds of cabbage; A couple of pounds of dried
soybean curd; A few lotuses’ roots; A few carrots. They cost more than
120 yuan.
As early as when people were snapping up masks, there was an
online debate about whether the government should control prices. Both
sides of the debate have overlooked the essential factor, which is reality.
The reality is that on the one hand, after decades of economic reform,
private enterprises and small businesses have become commonplace, and
the market already exists, so it’s not easy to exercise complete control. On
the other hand, the government has always been dominant in the market,
and state-owned enterprises are still huge. Control and adjustment are
carried out every day. Control of the market is necessary for the
departments to obtain benefits, and it is a manifestation and symbol of
power. Ignoring this fundamental status makes the arguments of both
sides appear to be useless.
The epicenter of a storm is always remarkably calm. At the center
of the pandemic, those of us fortunate enough not to have been infected
continued our increasingly simple, closed lives. We knew nothing about
the people who lived on another floor, in another room. We needed
information from those thousands of miles away on the Internet to
confirm our presence, suspicions, and doubts …… We don’t know if
ambulances are going on the streets. They pass by unhindered and in
silence.
A colleague shaved his head, not by himself or his family members,
but by an older man on the road with a shaving pick
