菲律宾方面周日称，一艘中国船只同一艘菲律宾渔船在南中国海有争议水域相撞，一名渔民死亡，4人失踪。菲律宾民防办公室主任拉莫斯（Benito Ramos）说，获救渔民确信，对方的船只来自中国。中国驻菲律宾使馆接受了媒体问询并指出，这类媒体报道有待查实。他们还补充说，”我们希望在报道前，有关人士以负责的态度澄清事实。”中国方面对南中国海的领土主权要求接近全部海域，同菲律宾有主权争议的斯卡伯勒浅滩（Scarborough Shoal，中称黄岩岛）距该国北部省份只有230公里，距中国的海南省则是870公里。
