SATURDAY, FEB. 15, 2020

Since the city being locked down on January 23, we as residents of Wuhan have been confined to a small room called “home.” Most citizens died in their homes. Those who could survive in the pandemic are the lucky ones.
The reality is that people at the center of the pandemic don’t know much more about the real situation than people in other cities. The Internet became an important channel and window into the pandemic, as we were isolated from the outside world. The information we received through the Internet was valuable. Still, my WeChat account was blocked by security authorities. I could not post any information, leave comments, or exchange greetings with my friends.
Since the beginning of literacy and writing, people have been using words to record all kinds of life in the world, but this was a sudden and unforeseen disaster for ordinary people. How much truth can our comments leave behind? Now, I have doubts about the power of language, text, video, and other communication tools.
It’s not unreasonable to say that we at the center of the pandemic know nothing about the outside world, but people outside are always eager to understand us. Many writers and celebrities documented the pandemic, such as Fang Fang, whose words have touched many people’s hearts. Fang Fang recorded what she saw, heard, and thought as a famous writer, as the President of the Writers’ Association. She recorded it as the Chairwoman of Federation of Literary Societies, as a resident of the apartment building where she lived. She recorded what happened to her

writer friends and their feelings of sorrow and compassion for many citizens.
It seems that yesterday’s rumors of a stricter lockdown were inaccurate or not implemented, although we don’t know about the actual situation.
Yesterday, the weather forecast said, “There would be heavy snow today, and the temperature would drop a lot.” That is not good news. We know through the media that the Covid-19 virus does not fear cold and likes humidity. Once pessimism sets in, it spreads quickly in the present state. People’s moods are gloomier than the weather.
Last night there were strong winds and a few thunderclaps, which is considered spring thunder. Then it started to rain, and the wind and rain seemed to last until this morning. It started snowing at about 3:00 pm, and it was heavy snow with snowflakes filling the sky. Those who are seriously ill or chronically ill are having a more challenging time. The good thing is that today’s temperature is not too low. The heavy snow that fell to the ground immediately turned into ice water. A few of the plum trees around the buildings are in bloom, red and white.
Viral pneumonia is the focus of the world’s attention but shouldn’t those with more severe illnesses be treated accordingly? The number of these patients is disproportionately higher. Nowadays, all major hospitals have closed their specialist clinics and all medical staff is being redeployed to fever clinics. For example, my mother, a Crohn’s disease patient, faces the problem of not going to the outpatient clinic, so she must go to a critical care pharmacy to buy her medicine. The city’s critical care patients rely on these few pharmacies for their medication. According to the government’s notice, these things can be solved through the community service center and the street branch office has dispatched several online cabs to each community. However, there are about 1,000 to 2,000 families in each community. How can a community service center take care of them all! The community service workers are only paid about 2,000 yuan per month and work overtime without a day off since the city

was shut down. They face the risk of being infected by the Covid-19 virus at any time, so how much can you expect them to do? And how much enthusiasm and motivation do they have? Now the drivers of the vehicles assigned to the community are paid 600 yuan per day. It is not clear how much the community service center will subsidize the workers during this period.
I want to emphasize that for these critically ill patients and those non-febrile patients who need emergency care, what choice should, or will they make, if they are faced with the situation of sitting at home and waiting to die?
Various government announcements have determined and changed people’s lives from the beginning of the city shutdown to the present. But unfortunately, all these measures give the impression of a lack of coordination and cooperation among various functional departments, and they all seem to be rushed. Perhaps this is the reason why the pandemic prevention work has been so slow to get on track.
While I was typing these words, I suddenly received a call from my parents that the gas cylinder in their house had run out and the induction stove they had prepared beforehand seemed to have broken down, so two elderly aged, 70 and 80, could not cook dinner. So now I’m a little worried that I might spread the virus to them. May God protect us!
