SATURDAY, FEB. 29, 2020
Finally, the rain has stopped. The temperature is rising. Looking out
of the window, I see the sunlight that had passed through the clouds.
The news about 10 yuan 10 pounds of vegetable packets was
clarified. It turns out that supermarkets have this deal. But only for
residents in need rather than for all people. Compared to others around
me, my sources of information are minimal.
With everyone in lockdown, people who must go to work are at risk
of infection. Still, they also gain some freedom, which may be an
advantage to save themselves if something drastic happens.
In my opinion, it is everyone’s responsibility and instinct to save
themselves, no matter what time they are in or where they are. Those in
deep trouble and who lose the ability to protect themselves are a test of
conscience for others around them, organizations, and society. In general,
very few people would throw stones at people falling in deep water, but
not many would take the risk to save them either. Many are only willing
to give a helping hand under the premise of ensuring their safety. What
about in these extraordinary times? I am not a Christian. I do know that
those who are devout are with God in the most dangerous times. They
are strong, resilient, have the strength to cross rivers, and yet are full of
tenderness as they spread their love to those around them. I always want
to see such people.
The Internet and media provide a lot of information regarding the
plight of foreigners stranded in Wuhan. Still, the people living in a lockeddown city don’t understand and are surprised and worried about them. I
have personally seen homeless vagrants wandering in the empty streets. I
think what we should be most concerned about is not that they might be
the spreaders of the virus, but whether they have been helped and
adequately housed. If they are in a city or place that cannot afford to
shuttle them, the City Hall should acknowledge the reality, not cover it
up. It’s not terrible to be incapable but covering it up, and whitewashing
is a desecration of conscience.
We have been living in isolation for over a month. Suppose we
hadn’t turned a blind eye to the crisis or hadn’t wavered and hesitated. In
that case, we might have had a different outcome, a different feeling, and
a different view today.
Although the mark of crisis is sealed in the hearts of all of us, human
beings can often survive crises and avoid them. Sometimes the crisis is
clear, and sometimes it lurks in all directions.
Although there are many doubts, I still feel that the outbreak is at a
relatively stable stage. We have had no new suspected patients with fever
for three days. Their close contacts have been isolated except for those
with special circumstances. Even with new suspected or even confirmed
patients, if we can implement and control scientifically instead of avoiding
responsibility and abusing power, we will be able to investigate and
eliminate the source under the current conditions. That also in a short
time. This method is not impossible.
In the current situation, we are more concerned about our
immediate lives. Such as, whether patients with other illnesses can receive
timely treatment. Whether the medicines we need can be provided,
whether the supplies can be fulfilled. And whether the goods are
affordable. However, if we turn a blind eye to this, secondary disasters
will not be far away.
In the past two days, leaders have visited the community to inspect,
investigate and give instructions. One of the leaders said: “This is an
extraordinary time. The most important task is to achieve zero new
patients and to maintain it for 15 days. That is the only way to reopen the
city. Thus, residents must endure these days and remind all residents that
this is not the time to indulge, not be tempted by finery, but to simplify
life as much as possible. Whenever I hear these words, I always feel very
frustrated.
The leaders of the commerce department explained the situation of
the ten yuan ten pounds of vegetable packets. They said this policy only
targets low-income people. The city cannot extend it to every household
because they cannot afford it. I could not understand what he tried to say.
Maybe I am not smart enough to understand his points.
Recently, I have been thinking about that. Unless all of us who live
in our homes are malnourished and weak, even the common cold can kill
all healthy people, not to mention those suffering from uremia, leukemia,
heart disease, cancer, and other grave diseases.
As far as I know, there are two South China markets in Jianghan
District. One is the well-known South China Seafood Wholesale Market.
The other is the South China Fruit Wholesale Market. These two markets
are not related, but they are very close to each other. It is said that the
fruit market is also infected. The amount of infected people is more
significant than in other areas around the market. Is this due to the large
flow of people in the fruit market, or are more people coming to the
wholesale market by car? Are these two markets employing the same team
of porters, or are they living a different lifestyle than the general
population, such as another way of cooking and eating? It may be
worthwhile for professionals to investigate.
My colleagues talked about the United States again during the break.
But surprisingly, the tone was completely different from yesterday. The
criticism of the United States became a very faint murmur. I don’t know
what happened. These people are free to do whatever they want.
